Our Data
All data comes directly from Ofgem (PlainEnergyBills). This includes:
- Default tariff price cap: covers the regulated maximum kWh price for standard variable tariffs
- Unit cost by region: covers the regulated maximum kWh price for standard variable tariffs
- Supplier comparison data: covers the regulated maximum kWh price for standard variable tariffs
Methodology
We download raw datasets from Ofgem, process them through our ETL pipeline, and organize them into searchable pages. No data is modified, interpolated, or editorialized. For full details, see our methodology page.
Updates
Ofgem releases updated data quarterly. We update our database when new data becomes available.

PlainEnergyBills covers UK retail energy markets with a focus on the regulatory framework. Editorial decisions follow the principles outlined in our methodology page: source attribution on every figure, plain-language explanation of regulatory mechanics, no acceptance of supplier commissions or sponsorship, and a published editorial pipeline through which Ofgem primary source data passes editorial review before publication. Our editorial process operates the continuous pipeline that loads raw Ofgem cap announcements into our database, summarises them, and publishes accessible explainers. Numbers are quoted directly from source publications without modification.
Scope and limitations
Our coverage spans the 14 UK distribution network regions for electricity (and 13 for gas), focuses on the domestic regulated retail market under the default tariff cap framework, and references the Ofgem cap-setting methodology, the RIIO price-control framework for distribution and transmission, the supplier licensing regime under the Standard Licence Conditions, and the consumer protection structure under the Energy Ombudsman and Citizens Advice. We do not cover commercial energy contracts (separate market with different regulatory boundaries), off-grid heating fuels (oil, LPG, solid fuel), or Northern Ireland (separately regulated under the Utility Regulator).
